One of the more profound questions we encounter in any loving relationship is just how honest we need to be? Does the true heart share its every thought and deed? Is taking an action without informing one?s life partner dishonest? In short, does love require complete disclosure?

In the middle of remodeling their pricey home in the Hollywood Hills, the owners are forced to tear down a recently constructed retaining wall because their contractor did not bother obtaining a permit. Unfortunately, further delays occur when an inspector finds a body buried beneath the wall?s recently laid foundation. This is just the kind of discovery that can set a home improvement project way, way, back, since it requires Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson and the rest of her Major Crimes Division to figure out how one neighbor ended up buried in another?s back yard.

But the owners of this fancy home, a married couple with a young child, are not the only ones suffering from disclosure issues. Brenda, heeding advice from Captain Raydor and Chief Pope, finally decides she must seek out legal representation in the ongoing civil lawsuit brought by the family of Turell Baylor against the city, the LAPD, Major Crimes and herself. And tonight?s episode introduces Chief Johnson?s personal lawyer, Gavin Q. Baker, a former City Attorney now specializing in defending police officers. Played with confident grace by Mark Pellegrino (of Lost, Capote and Supernatural, to name only a very few of his more conspicuous performances), Gavin may be the only person in the history of our series who has effectively kept Brenda from answering her phone. But can Gavin make her tell him the truth about what happened between her and Turell?

Our disclosure issues mount as Fritz finds himself embroiled in succession of bad (and increasingly expensive) choices. Jon Tenney proves, once again, why he?s regarded both as a brilliant romantic lead and a gifted character actor.

It may surprise some people to know that Fritz Howard was never meant to be a series regular. But when Jon Tenney showed up to audition for The Closer, and we could find no place for him in our squad of detectives, we decided Brenda needed a serious love interest; Fritz Howard became not only a window into her personal life, her steady date and, eventually, her husband, he also added depth to a story that now draws nearer and nearer to its conclusion.

Many, many people told me not to let Fritz and Brenda get married. ?Don?t you realize,? they insisted, ?you will kill the romantic tension necessary to keep a television show alive.? Not so. Dating and living together represent only the merry-go-round of relationships; for the rollercoaster ride of one?s life, you really need some wedding bells. Naturally, staying safely on track requires honesty, but just how much? And what are the consequences of being less than utterly candid with one?s spouse? These are questions we could not have fully asked before Brenda and Fritz took their vows.

Next week, we welcome back Roxanne Dawson, this time as a Special Guest Star in one of the most emotionally wrenching episodes we have ever produced.

Until then,
James Duff
