Tag Team Mixed Martial Arts | Treasured Articles
Tag Team MMA, a new ?sport? that keeps the majority of the current mixed martial arts rules but adds additional people. It is exactly how it sounds, with fighters tagging in and out, and beyond that, the rules are sporadic because the sport is brand new. Tag Team MMA was featured in-between an actual major fight, as sideshow entertainment. Like the regular sport, the point of the match is to score as many points in a certain amount of time. To earn a point, you have to submit the other fighter. One of the largest difference is that knockouts are discouraged in tag team, and they have banned close fists strikes to the head. The only strikes allowed are open handed ?Slaps?. Also, certain fights forbid kicks to the head.
Tag team MMA allows fighters to tag each other in and out. After ?tagging in? for, the next five seconds, both members of a team can attack the other fighter, before the partners officially switch out. Anything can happen in these two on one situations, including hitting the opponent (open handed of course) and helping your partner with a submission. After five seconds, the fight reverts back to a one on one. In order to increase the cool down period in between each tag, a team is deducted a point for every switch. This prevents a team from continually having a two one one situation. Unless your opponent switches out, or you can submit your opponent, switching out is detrimental to your team.
The oddest part of Tag Team MMA is the tie breaker. The tie breaker begins with all four combatants fighting at the same time, and the first person to score a submission wins the match.
As of right now, Tag Team MMA will remain a gimmick. The open handed slaps to the face is ridiculous and undermines the seriousness of MMA. Modern day MMA audiences want the fewest rules in the fights, and limiting the types of strikes available to a fighter, hurts the credibility and the image of mixed martial arts.
The tag team fight took place on the regular Octagon with only one referee. This may be okay for the first few minutes of the fight, when the fighters are tagging in an out, but once the fight features all of the combatants at the same time, they should consider having multiple refs. It is impossible for one person to keep track of all the fighters, let alone watching for tap outs. The chances of a serious injury skyrockets. Also, the size of the Octagon was designed for one on one matches and doubling the amount of fighters inherently raises the risk of injury. The competitors were able to tag in and out at will, at almost any point in a match, so if a fighter was close to submitting, they could just tap out. Then the partner would save him from submission. Adding size to the ring emphasizes positioning.
Tag Team MMA will never become mainstream in America, due to culture issues. Those who toot MMA as ?gay? will have even more ammunition against the sport because of the tie breakers, which often have indiscernible male bodies clumped up together. Tag Team MMA will find its niche audience, but until they implement stricter rules, bring back punching, and increase the size of the ring, tag team is best kept to the WWE.
