Heat and Cool Dishware to Match the Food for Professional Presentation [Food]

Heat and Cool Dishware to Match the Food for Professional Presentation Serving cold food that should be hot or warm food that should be cold is never a good idea. For a restaurant-style touch to your dinner service, consider warming up your dinner plates on top of the oven while you bake your food or putting your salad bowls in the fridge for a few minutes prior to serving.

If you know someone who complains that their food has "gotten cold" even though it just came out of the oven, consider warming their plate on top of the oven before you put the hot food on it. It's a common practice in restaurants and cafes (which is partially why many servers warn you of a hot plate when they put it down in front of you,) as is chilling a salad bowl or dessert plate to make sure a chilled dish doesn't warm up too much before it gets to the table.

This trick won't keep the food from eventually coming to room temperature, but it will definitely slow down the process and hopefully keep your hard work fresh on the way to your dinner table. Of course, you don't want to keep your plates in the oven or salad bowls in the fridge forever forever, but if you have guests or are hosting a dinner party, it might help. Photo by Hadaiku.

Articles 20VN | Two Educational Board Games for the Whole Family ...

Board games can be a lot of fun but when they are educational too, the family plays together and feels enriched. Here are 2 educational board games I recommend...

Blurt - The Webster's Game of Word Racing

Blurt is a hilarious, fast-paced game of rapid recall that will have both kids and adults scrambling to be the first to shout out a word based on a given definition. In the heat of the race to call out the right word, even bookworms with big vocabularies may find themselves tongue-tied. Fortunately Blurt has a Junior Version for kids as young as seven to get a chance to learn new words and play in their peer group. It includes 300 cards, which have 1800 clues at 2 playing levels!

To give you an example, one player says, "what word means 'a partially dried grape'?" If you are the first to say "raisin", you're on your way to winning! Players take turns reading clues aloud, competing to blurt out the correct answer first and move ahead on the board. The first person or team to circle the board wins. Sounds simple, right? But as the race for the right word heats up, and the blurting gets boisterous, it's easy to make costly mistakes! Blurt is a great vocabulary builder for kids, a hilarious addition to adult parties, and a must for family game night.

Dino Math Tracks Place Value Game

An award winner with a prehistoric twist here's a game that reinforces counting, addition, subtraction and place value skills. Presented as a race around the rainbow with a pack of pintsize, prehistoric dinosaurs, it works on the mathematical concept of place value and gives kids reinforcement in what makes our base-10 number system tick.

Each player is allotted one dinosaur for each of the four tracks (the tracks are labeled 1s, 10s, 100s, and 1000s). To play, a player rolls four dice to create a 4-digit number and then moves his or her prehistoric pal to the appropriate 1s, 10s, 100s, and 1000s places. Problem-solving strategies are honed as players scurry to get all four tiny triceratops into the dino haven, ahead of the other players' foursomes. Not only is it easy to get bumped along the way, it's also possible to lose one's sense of exponentials!

But all said and done, this is a game that will really bring you and the kids close. While they develop a love for numbers. What better educational board games can you be playing?

Branson: Winslet saved my mom from fire

Richard Branson says Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet helped rescue his elderly mother from a fire that destroyed his Caribbean home.

The Virgin Group boss said about 20 people, including Winslet, her children, and his mother were staying in the eight-bedroom Great House on Necker, his private isle in the British Virgin Islands when it was struck by lightning during a tropical storm early Monday.

Branson said no one was hurt. He said in his blog that he wanted to offer "many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year (old) mum out of the main house to safety." He joked that Winslet "was wondering when a director was going to shout 'CUT!'"

Branson said he was staying in another property around 100 yards (meters) away with his wife, Joan and son Sam, 25.

He said the fire broke out around 4 a.m. during a tropical storm with lightning and high winds, and Sam managed to help evacuate Winslet and other guests from the house. Branson said the guests, including his daughter Holly, 29, all managed to get out safely.

Tropical Storm Irene walloped the Virgin islands and headed towards Puerto Rico late Sunday and early Monday, strengthening into a hurricane Monday with winds of about 80mph (130 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Winslet's spokeswoman, Sara Keene, confirmed the actress was unharmed.

Branson said the house was "completely destroyed" and the fire was not entirely out Monday.

"My office was based in the house and I have lost thousands of photographs which is very sad," Branson said.

He said he planned to rebuild the house "as soon as we can."

"We'll all stay here for the time being," he said. "There's a lot of damage and we won't be able to stick it back together again right away."

Virgin said the cause of the fire was still being investigated but lightning was the likely culprit.

Branson, 60, bought the island in the early 1980s and began building the Great House in 1982. He also has developed an exclusive eco-resort on the island showcasing renewable energy technology.

Winslet, 35, shot to international stardom with her appearance opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in James Cameron's "Titanic," and sealed her reputation with a best actress Academy Award in 2009 for "The Reader."

She has two children, 10-year-old Mia and Joe, 7, from marriages to directors Jim Threapleton and Sam Mendes.

Avoidable Real Estate Buying Mishaps To Avoid - Free Article ...

Mistakes in purchasing real estate can occur with new investors, seasoned buyers and home buyers. The saying that not every investment is a good one is very true in the current market. In this buyer oriented climate, some purchasers rush to buy and find they made a very expensive mistake.

It is important to work out the finances before buying a property. That seems simple, but with so much hype surrounding the buy low and sell high investment, mistakes can be made. Counting on an instant sale is usually an error, and the buyer should be able to pay the mortgage until the home can be sold.

Financing a home is very often necessary and normal but it may delay the positive equity scenario. The interest charges added to a sizable principle can delay a home buyer?s dream of positive equity. Adding insurance or repairs to the mortgage may delay the positive equity time line further.

The maxim that the best deals come only from owner direct listings is not necessarily true. Anytime a buyer examines a property it should be evaluated on its own merits rather than by the source of the property listing. Brokers and agents can lead buyers to very motivated sellers and some excellent deals.

Buying rental properties and then making them profitable is not as easy as it sounds. Maintenance, taxes, repairs, checking references for renters and down-time between renters can eat up profits if the investor is unprepared for the realities. Renting out property can provide an excellent cash flow for a shrewd buyer with time to invest in making it work.

The most common errors when purchasing real estate to either live in or invest in are relatively easy to avoid. Most mistakes in property purchases are the result of common misconceptions and easily seen. Now can be a great time to purchase property, and the right property will be easier to live with.

Working with experienced Scenic Acres Real Estate professionals will help you to avoid mistakes when you are buying real estate. You can find the Scenic Acres homes for sale that will meet all of your requirements easily and quickly today!

Local-Bars-Restaurants, Business-Networking, Cool-event, Western ...

09/15/2011 - 5:15am

?

Starting September 15th, Pioneer Valley Local First will be launching a new monthly business networking event called "Local Thirst." The event will move around the three counties of the Pioneer Valley and will be on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 5:15 to 7pm. Please check back to see what local restaurant or bar the event will be at for September and future months.

While anyone is welcome to attend, the idea of Local Thirst is to bring together our membership so we can all begin to better know each other. Hopefully all of us being better connected can also have the added benefit of having more business take place among you, our members.

Some months there maybe a program or guest speaker, but most often it will just be good people getting together over food and drink to talk about our lives and businesses.

We are planning on having this be a free event, but some venues may want to charge a nominal fee to cover any food that they might put out.

We hope you can join us!

New-home sales fell 0.7 percent in July

(AP) ? The number of Americans who bought new homes fell for the fourth straight month in July, putting sales on track to finish this year as the worst on records dating back half a century.

Sales of new homes fell nearly 1 percent in July to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 298,000, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That's less than half the 700,000 that economists say represent a healthy market.

Housing remains the weakest part of the economy. Last year was the worst for new-home sales on records dating back a half century.

While new homes represent less than one-fifth of the housing market, they have an outsize impact on the economy. Each home built creates an average of three jobs and $90,000 in taxes, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

But all sales remain weak. Sales of previously occupied homes fell in July for the third time in four months, and they are trailing last year's 4.91 million sales, the fewest since 1997. In a healthy economy, people buy roughly 6 million existing homes annually.

High unemployment, larger required down payments and tougher lending standards are preventing many people from buying homes.

Plunging stocks and a growing fear that the U.S. could tip back into another recession are also keeping people from entering the troubled housing market.

A report last week on sales of previously owned homes showed that more sales than usual fell apart at the last minute, a sign that many buyers may be nervous about the economy. At least 16 percent of deals were canceled head of closings last month ? four times the rate in May.

Foreclosures and short sales are forcing down prices. A short sale is when a lender accepts less than what is owed on the mortgage.

Those homes are selling at an average discount of 20 percent, and they lower neighboring values. That's made many re-sales a bargain compared with new homes, creating an average 30 percent disparity in prices.

Sales of new homes have fallen 18 percent in the two years since the Great Recession officially ended.

A telling sign of how bad things have gotten for the housing industry: Prices have dropped more since the recession started, on a percentage basis, than during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

And it took 19 years for prices to fully recover after the Depression.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? The annual Kansas City Aviation Expo has resumed a day after a stunt pilot crashed to his death in front of thousands of spectators.

Bryan Jensen was performing maneuvers in his small plane at 1:45 p.m. Saturday when he didn't pull out of a dive in time and crashed.

The show halted after the fiery crash, and spectators were ushered out of Wheeler Downtown Airport.

But, the show resumed Sunday.

Jensen flew a custom-built biplane dubbed "The Beast" in air shows across the country. His website says he has logged more than 23,000 hours of flight time for major airlines and was promoted to captain by Delta Airlines earlier this year.

A message left Sunday morning on Delta's after-hours pager was not immediately returned.
