Hydromechanical watch concept pumps away the hours for horologists (video)

Vincent Perriard and crew have apparently gone from overseeing the Concord C1 QuantumGravity watch and its fluorescent liquid battery gauge to designing another high end watch that combines mechanical action and fluid measurement with the HYT H1. This hand-wound timepiece has a 65 hour power reserve and displays the time via pumping bellows that push bright green fluorescine past the time markers. A rendered video embedded after the break does more to explain how the watch works, but may not help you figure out its rumored $45k price tag.

Daily Kos: Obama discusses insourcing, merging federal business ...

You?ve heard of outsourcing ? well, this is insourcing. And in this make or break moment for the middle class and those working to get into the middle class, that?s exactly the kind of commitment to country that we need.

President Barack Obama packed a couple of ideas into his weekly address this morning, discussing both his "insourcing" initiative to give tax breaks to businesses that bring jobs back to America and his proposal to merge six federal agencies to streamline government interaction with business.

He discussed his meeting with American CEO's this past week and the incentives (and disincentives) he plans to push in order to get overseas business operations to relocate back home.

I told those CEOs what I?ll tell any business leader: ask yourself what you can do to bring more jobs back to the country that made your success possible. And I?ll make sure you?ve got a government that does everything in its power to help you succeed.

That?s why, in the next few weeks, I will put forward new tax proposals that reward companies that choose to do the right thing by bringing jobs home and investing in America ? and eliminate tax breaks for companies that move jobs overseas.

He also carefully laid out the case for his seeking authority from Congress to merge agencies and cut down on bureaucracy?a move that will place the obstructionist Republicans in Congress in a tight spot as aim to deny the president any victory in an election year at the same time they're campaigning against "bloated" government:

I asked Congress to reinstate the authority that past presidents have had to streamline and reform the Executive Branch. This is the same sort of authority that every business owner has to make sure that his or her company keeps pace with the times. It?s the same authority that presidents had for over 50 years ? up until Ronald Reagan. And let me be clear: I will only use this authority for reforms that result in more efficiency, better service, and a leaner government.

The practical effects on enterprises, according to the president, will be several:

?instead of forcing small business owners to navigate the six departments and agencies in the federal government that focus on business and trade, we?ll have one department. One place where entrepreneurs can go from the day they come up with an idea and need a patent, to the day they start building a warehouse, to the day they?re ready to ship their products overseas.

And in the meantime, we?re creating a new website ? BusinessUSA ? that will serve as a one-stop shop with information for businesses small and large that want to start selling their stuff around the world.

It's going to be interesting to watch in the weeks ahead what lines conservatives take to shoot this down. Anti-efficiency? Anti-business friendly? Nice little rock and a hard place the president has set up.

The full transcript can be found beneath the fold and on the White House website.

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
January 14, 2011
The White House

As you can see, I brought a few things with me for this week?s video. A padlock. A pair of boots. A candle. And a pair of socks.

No, we?re not having a yard sale. And these products may not appear to have much in common. But they?re united by three proud words: ?Made in America.? They?re manufactured by American workers, in American factories, and shipped to customers here and around the world.

The companies that make these products are part of a hopeful trend: they?re bringing jobs back from overseas. You?ve heard of outsourcing ? well, this is insourcing. And in this make or break moment for the middle class and those working to get into the middle class, that?s exactly the kind of commitment to country that we need.

This week, I invited executives from businesses that are insourcing jobs to a forum at the White House. These are CEOs who take pride in hiring people here in America, not just because it?s increasingly the right thing to do for their bottom line, but also because it?s the right thing to do for their workers and for our communities and our country.

It?s also why on Friday, I called on Congress to help me make government work better for you. Right now, we have a 21st century economy, but we?ve still got a government organized for the 20th century. Over the years, the needs of Americans have changed, but our government has not. In fact, it?s gotten even more complex. And that has to change.

That?s why I asked Congress to reinstate the authority that past presidents have had to streamline and reform the Executive Branch.

These changes will make it easier for small business owners to get the loans and support they need to sell their products around the world. For example, instead of forcing small business owners to navigate the six departments and agencies in the federal government that focus on business and trade, we?ll have one department.

This means that more small business owners will see their hard work pay off. More companies will be able to hire new workers. And we?ll be able to rebuild an economy that?s not known for paper profits or financial speculation, but for making and selling products like these. Products ?Made in America.?

Thank you, and have a great weekend.

Qualcomm Halo wireless charging concept eyes-on

Let's run through the fundamentals of wireless charging: floor-mounted electromagnets pump out EM waves to your EV's engine to absorb. This means ripping up the floor to install and precisely driving your whip over the exact spot. There's no efficiency loss between wireless and wired charging, in case you were wondering. We got to speak to Qualcomm's Joe Barrett as he walked us through the chip foundry's innovative approach to the technology that it picked up from the University of Auckland. The Halo is a 28mm plate that can reportedly push 3.3kW/h to your vehicle without requiring it to park it precisely over the unit. The company's not talking about vertical range, but did insist that it would charge an SUV, so we can assume it'll travel at least a foot off the ground. The company is planning to foster an open standard for the technology through licensing and has joined the three-year design cycle that modern cars undergo -- with an expectation that we'll see the first commercial models of the technology surfacing in 2014, which you can just lay on the floor of your garage. A 50 unit trial led by Chargemaster and Polar is currently underway under the names of your favorite tier-one automaker.

Legal Action of the Day: Va. justices to hear AG's request for climate ...

Climategate hits the Virginia Supreme Court today.

The Associated Press reports,

The Virginia Supreme Court is set to hear arguments today in Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli?s demand for documents related to a former University of Virginia climate-change researcher?s work.

Cuccinelli is seeking emails and other documents as part of his investigation into whether Michael Mann, who now works at Penn State, defrauded taxpayers by using manipulated data to obtain government grants. Cuccinelli is appealing a judge?s ruling that he was not specific enough about how Mann might have broken the law, and that he lacks authority to investigate federal grants.

The attorney general, a global-warming skeptic, submitted a more specific demand for just one state grant. Another judge put that matter on hold until after the Supreme Court rules, which probably will be in early March.

Housing bust still haunts the banks (AP)

NEW YORK ? The economy may be healing, but banks are suffering from a housing hangover.

JPMorgan Chase spent $3.2 billion last year to fight lawsuits, almost all of them over poorly written mortgages. That was down from $5.7 billion in 2010, but it made clear that housing still haunts the bank, five years after the bubble burst.

The bank said Friday that it set aside $528 million in the last three months of 2011 to fight lawsuits. It also spent $925 million in the fourth quarter to carry out foreclosures and handle mortgage defaults.

"There's still a huge drag," CEO Jamie Dimon said. "I mean, you're talking about several billion dollars a year in mortgage alone."

The expenses took a bite out of JPMorgan's quarterly profit, which fell 23 percent from a year earlier, to $3.7 billion, and missed Wall Street expectations. Stocks across the banking industry declined as a result.

For the full year, JPMorgan, the nation's largest bank, posted a record profit of $19 billion, up from $17.4 billion in 2010.

JPMorgan also took a hit because of choppy financial markets. It collected $1.1 billion in investment banking fees, down 39 percent from the year before. Its fees for underwriting debt fell 40 percent, and 65 percent for underwriting stock.

The struggles came while the economy and the job market were showing signs of a real recovery. JPMorgan said the household finances of its customers were stabilizing, and more people paid credit card bills on time.

The customer improvements allowed the bank to book a profit of $730 million by reducing the reserves it had set aside for credit card defaults.

JPMorgan's profit for October through December amounted to 90 cents per share. Wall Street analysts surveyed by FactSet, a financial data provider, were expecting 93 cents.

It was the first time in four years that JPMorgan fell short of expectations. Profit fell 23 percent from $4.8 billion, or $1.12 per share, in the same quarter in 2010. Revenue fell 17 percent to $22.2 billion.

JPMorgan stock fell 2.5 percent to close at $35.92 Friday. Its competitors followed: Citigroup was down 2.7 percent and Bank of America 2.7 percent. Wells Fargo, which relies less on investment banking, was flat.

Stock market traders take their cue from the results of large banks like JPMorgan, which has 50 million customers. The results demonstrated that it remains unclear how long the mortgage problem will be a drag on the industry.

During the housing bubble last decade, the banks gave out mortgage loans without checking for documents that proved the borrowers had jobs, or could even pay their monthly bills.

The boom in so-called subprime lending was one of the causes of the financial crisis that erupted in the fall of 2008.

JPMorgan and other banks are being forced to buy back many of the soured loans that they sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government lenders, during the boom. In the last quarter, JPMorgan lost $390 million from the buybacks.

The bank's higher litigation expense does not bode well for Bank of America, which has been damaged far more than JPMorgan from lawsuits related to mortgages. Last year, Bank of America agreed to pay close to $13 billion to settle mortgage issues.

The banks also face a mountain of lawsuits for documentation problems during home foreclosures. In December, Massachusetts sued five major banks, including JPMorgan, for deceptive foreclosure practices.

JPMorgan was the first major U.S. bank to report earnings. Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley all report next week.

Among other highlights from JPMorgan's fourth quarter results:

? Corporate customers took out $110 billion in loans, 12 percent more than a year earlier. That suggests businesses are feeling more confident that demand for their products is picking up. The loans could be used to build factories, expand plants and open warehouses. Often that translates to job creation.

? In a closely watched and politically charged gauge, the bank set aside $1.2 billion, 36 percent less than the year before, to pay its investment bankers.

? The bank took a loss of $567 million from an accounting rule that applies to the value of its own corporate debt that it sells to investors. The value of that debt rose in the fourth quarter, but because the bank would theoretically have to pay more to buy it back on the open market, the bank takes a loss.

JPMorgan and the other big banks submitted this week to their annual Federal Reserve stress tests. The bank has asked for approval to raise its dividend for shareholders again.

Last year, the bank increased its quarterly dividend to 25 cents a share from 5 cents. Dimon told reporters that investors can expect a similar increase this year if regulators grant approval.

Samsung N Service unveiled at CES: Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Comcast and Verizon onboard

Well, what have we here? Looks as if Samsung's cooking up quite the content partnership here at CES 2012, with Verizon, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Comcast (at least) onboard. From a content creation standpoint, NBC Universal is evidently signed on to crack open its coffers and let the material pour fourth, and we're guessing we'll hear of quite a few more once the announcement gets official. As of now, the so-called N Service looks to be one that'll enable select pay-TV subscribers to stream content onto Samsung devices -- hopefully whilst far, far away from home. At least for FiOS TV users, those who take advantage of N Service will be able to "access live streaming FiOS TV channels, as well as Flex View commercial movies and TV shows from one's Samsung Smart TV or Blu-ray player." It'll obviously work with multi-room households, too. Have a peek at the detail shots below, and keep it locked right here as we learn more.

Robert Pattinson buzzes off his trademark hair

What does Kristen Stewart have to say about this?

Robert Pattinson stepped out without his trademark accessory ? his world-famous hair! ? at Wednesday's People's Choice Awards held at the Nokia Live Theatre in Los Angeles.

PHOTOS: Rob's many sexy faces

Casually clad in a blue button-up polo and jeans, the British star, 25, revealed a startling buzz cut as he accepted a Favorite Drama Movie for "Water for Elephants" (his costar Reese Witherspoon was M.I.A.).

No word yet on why ? or for which film role ? the "Twilight" hunk went for the drastic new do. (Back in July, Pattinson emerged with a nutty, half-shaved 'do to fans at Comic Con in San Diego; the rather schizophrenic look was for a pivotal scene in his trippy thriller "Cosmopolis.")

PHOTOS: Rob and Kristen strip down for sexy honeymoon scenes

"Woah. Thank you very much. I don't know why they asked me to accept it because it's really a lot of other people as well," Pattinson said of his People's Choice Award at the podium. "When I was doing this movie, I was having so much fun doing it that I was saying to everyone I didn't even care if anyone saw it. But now that people have seen it and they're giving awards for it, I'm even more thankful for the whole experience, so thank you guys very much."

Beyonce baby complaints at NY hospital dismissed (AP)

NEW YORK ? State health officials on Wednesday dismissed complaints that patients in a hospital neonatal unit were mistreated while Beyonce was there giving birth to her and Jay-Z's daughter.

They had received two complaints about Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, one made anonymously, the other from someone who had learned about the matter through the media, a health department spokesman said. Officials reviewed the complaints and dismissed them Wednesday night, spokesman Jeffrey Gordon said without elaborating.

The hospital, a popular choice for the rich and famous from late philanthropist Brooke Astor to "30 Rock" star Tina Fey, said it was conducting its own probe.

Beyonce gave birth to the couple's baby, Blue Ivy Carter, at the hospital on Saturday.

Media reports said Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, paid $1 million to take over a floor and their security guard blocked parents from the neonatal unit for hours. The hospital denied the reports, saying the couple paid the standard rate for an executive suite without disclosing what that is.

One new mother, Rozz Nash-Coulon, told The Associated Press that her twins, born Dec. 28, were in the neonatal unit and, starting Friday, intense security measures made it a struggle to see them as guards directed hallway traffic.

"Once they checked in there was high security everywhere," she said Monday. "It looked like the president was on our floor. The hospital's security cameras were taped over. Internal windows from the hallways into the ward were blacked out."

The hospital's executive director was heading up its own inquiry into the complaints, hospital spokeswoman Barbara Osborn said. The hospital was interviewing parents who had children in the newborn wing when Jay-Z and Beyonce were there, she said.

"We have spoken to seven out of the 10," she said. "None have reported being stopped from seeing their babies."

She confirmed that security cameras were briefly taped over when the Carter family was being moved, "but only when a security guard was present" on the fourth floor, where the neonatal unit is located. She declined to say why they were taped over.

She said that other parents at the unit did notice "enhanced security." But she said none felt restricted from accessing the unit or any other at the hospital.

Jay-Z confirmed the birth of the couple's daughter in a song released on his social website Life and Times on Monday.
